For Guides operating the sound system....
1. Please hold yourself responsible for operating the sound system, including repair costs for any damage caused by your operation.
2. The system is quite simple to use, with the CD/Mixer probably the most "complex" of all. It is possible to damage the speakers or other components (or people's ears!) if used improperly, so please be sure you know what you're doing.
3. Please spend some time with the system to learn it prior to using it during an event. Also, refer to the owner's manual as necessary (email me for a copy of this manual.... tom AT wyldwoodstudio DOT com...I "coded" it here so internet spiders won't copy my mail address).
Steps for operating the system.....
Setup:
1.Carefully take the CD/Mixer (cables are attached) from the shelf and move it to the location from which you will operate - usually the table nearby. Note that this mixer has three long wires connected to the back, all joined by wire wraps. These are the LEFT, RIGHT and POWER cords - grouped as one "ambilical" cord for simplicity. There is also one 1/8" audio connector cable at the back line inputs for patching in an external sound device.
2. If using an external sound device (laptop, iPod, etc.), plug that audio cable from the back line inputs into the device. Please leave this with the device when done.
3. Check the mixer controls and be sure that BOTH channels are switched to the "CD" position - unless you are using an external device (if so, that channel should be set to "LINE/PHONO" - Note that on the back, the setting for the line inputs is ALWAYS to be set to "LINE", rather than PHONO - do not change this please unless you are playing vinyl records from an external phonograph player!).
4. When ready, turn on the POWER STRIP at the shelves- this should turn on ALL of the sound equipment. When done, turn this ONE switch off to power down, return the mixer to the shelf and you're done. It is possible someone turned off the mixer individually before you, so if it did not power up, turn on that switch. If it still will not power up, it is possible the small power plug came out of the back of the mixer, so check that. You should have power lights ON in the front of each of the units on the shelves (two amps, the graphic EQ unit, the black BOSE EQ unit and the power strip). All power goes through the power strip from the one wall plug. If needed, troubleshoot things and leave things "NORMAL" when done, so it's simple for each person to use...let's all work together.
5. The mixer "default" (how it is at power up) will have the "Pitch" controls ON (red lights on each channel for "Pitch"). Although the "normal" pitch setting is the MID (ZERO) position, so that CD's do not play at a weird pitch (or VARY in pitch!!), it is best to simply push the pitch buttons once to turn OFF this feature, so no pitch variations will occur during your program.
6. The mixer "default" is "CONTINUOUS" play mode (it will play the whole CD unless you stop/pause or set it to "SINGLE" mode). To set it to "SINGLE" mode, you just press the "SNGL" button(s) - there's one for each channel, of course. If you have your whole program on one CD, you'll want to leave this in "CONTINUOUS" mode, so do nothing. If you cue up each tune on CD's and then play when ready, you'll want to push those buttons to switch it to "SINGLE" play mode.
7. Set the MASTER VOLUME (on the right) to the stop at the top dark line - leave this there during your event and use the channel controls to adjust volume, as desired.
8. Each channel has CD controls, eject, cue, volume, etc. - If using an external device, set the external device output volume to approximately 7 on a scale of 10 and then set THAT mixer channel fader (volume) control accordingly for the volume during your program. Please do not use the same channel for external devices all the time...let's have it float from LEFT to RIGHT, etc. This is so we don't wear out one mixer channel faster than the other!! So, please check which channel it's in and move it to the other channel from time to time!! THANKS!!
9. Do not change any of the graphic EQ settings (on the shelf)!! (There is a grid cover on this to protect against this!). This EQ unit is being used only to "tune the room" in general and NOT to be used to adjust for song variances during your program. For that, simply use the three EQ settings on the mixer (and/or on an external device). If you want more bass, please do NOT raise the bass control on the Mixer or external device, but instead LOWER the HIGH and MID controls (a little) and raise the VOLUME....this sends more bass to the subwoofers primarily, without overdriving the BOSE speakers (we don't want to overdrive the BOSE speakers with too much bass!).
10. Please use WAV files rather than MP3 files whenever possible. We have a high fidelity system and MP3's are FAR from high fidelity. This is not a "rule" or anything, as songs are available from many sources....yet, people pay for our programs and we're acting in a "professional" role as the Guide, so our very best foot forward is preferred. Store bought music CD's contain WAV files. If you burn a CD from an MP3 file source off your computer or iPod, they become "fake" WAV files, since they are from an MP3 source.....once reduced in quality to an MP3 file, that's the best it will ever be.
NOTE 1: The "NORMAL" settings for the mixer is to have each channel set to "CD", for guides to play CD's - please leave the mixer set in this normal position when you are done.
NOTE 2: If using a microphone, plug this into the microphone input on the back of the unit and use the microphone channel on the front to control its level, as desired. It is a 1/4" high impedence input on the back, so you will need a low-z to high-z adaptor if using a low-z microphone.
NOTE 3: For detailed questions, please first refer to the owner's manual and, if necessary, call Tomaji (512) 762-6279 or knowledgeable Guide, for further assistance. The owner's manual can be downloaded to your computer by emailing me and I'll send it to you. It's 2.4 MB in size and I don't know how to post it here.
FINAL NOTE: I will amend these notes based on your comments and things I forgot to put in here, etc. - we're all community, so please let's all work together, just as we dance together...thanks and love, Tomaji
